There are some great resources out there, most of my favorite are blogs, about how to save money!

Yesterday I came across a blog with some great recipe’s to make your own cleaning products, including laundry detergent, comet, and even window cleaner. She not only SAVES a TON of money, they are also safe, effective and earth friendly. She spends around $4 – $5 a year on laundry detergent! That is great savings!
I am going to try this as soon as I am out of the detergent that I stocked up on when they were FREE after coupons.
Go Here to browse her posts on making your own household cleaners! Below is her Recipe for Liquid Laundry Detergent!

I’m serious! You can do this! You can make your own laundry detergent and it is super easy and of course…..super cheap. All you need is 3 items and a 5-gallon bucket {I purchased all of them at Winco}.
Here’s what you need:
1 bar Fels Naptha soap
1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax
*Grate the bar of Fels Naptha with a cheese grater. Place the grated Fels Naptha in a saucepan and cover with 6-8 cups of water. Heat on low until dissolved.
*Add 1 cup of washing soda and 1 cup of Borax and mix well. Pour mixture into 5-gallon bucket. Fill the bucket with warm water, and stop when you get within 3 inches from the top. Stir well.
*As it cool, it will thicken. Use 1/2 – 1 cup per wash load. Safe for H.E. Washers too.
Yields approx. 75 cups
Once your laundry detergent cools, stir it one more time with a wisk. You might have to put your hand in there to reach the bottom. It will look kind of like egg drop soup, but the more you stir it the more pasty it will look. You can either use the detergent right out of the 5-gallon bucket, but if your like me….you prefer less mess.
I had saved several empty laundry detergent bottles {and then asked friends and family for some of theirs} and then poured my detergent into the empty bottles. Make sure to rinse them out first before you start pouring in your homemade stuff. Before using my detergent from my bottles, I make sure to shake them a little. It will help remix your detergent so that it won’t come out lumpy. If your detergent sits for several days, it will start to thicken and set it self up, hence the reason it will be slightly lumpy.
My total on my 3 items where:
1 box Borax-$3.49 {makes about nine 5-gallon buckets}
1 box Wash soda-$2.73 {makes about six to seven 5-gallon buckets}
1 Fels Naptha Bar-$1.06
I figured out that one 5-gallon bucket of homemade laundry detergent approx. costed me $2.00 to make and that each wash load will only cost me $0.03-$0.04. Now that’s definitely saving money!
Do you have a question for me about your homemade laundry detergent? It just so happens, that I have answers! Go HERE to see my Q&A post.
Thanks for the info “My Frugal Lifestyle”!

So last week I posted the Cereal deals and I hope you took advantage.
I purchased manufacturer coupons online at Ebay and called Safeway and they actually took a cereal order for me. So today I got my coupons in the mail and my dear husband took me to the store to pick up and pay for it all.
I got 20 boxes of Captain Crunch for $0.40 each! 20 boxes of Fruit Loops for $0.50 each! And a bunch of Quaker Granola Bars for $0.90 each (could have done better on the Bars, but my 3 year old LOVES them and we were out).
To see how I did this, check out my previous post. PS. Sale Ends tomorrow, 5.18.10. I am hoping I am set with cereal for the next 6 months! Woo Hoo!

I love getting organized, so today I decided I was going to tackle grocery shopping and decided to find a nice simple list online. After looking through a lot online and wanting something productive and good looking for the fridge, I came across this from “The Project Girl”. I like that it combines the menu planning with the grocery list! So today, I will give it a try!

If you want these free downloads, go to Project Girls Blog and print them HERE.

Go Green and Save Money
The following info is directly from their website….
The Ultimate Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Event
Celebrate Earth Day with us this April 22nd at the annual clothing exchange. Birth to children’s size 18 clothing, shoes and accessories are needed. Maternity and nursing clothes and baby equipment are also welcomed. Items remaining after the event will be donated to charity.
This is how it works! At 5:30 pm we will have tables set up from newborn to size 16/18. Bring in your clean and gently worn clothes and shoes and set them out on the correct size table. If we get enough volunteers, we’ll be able to set them out for you. Then go shop from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the other tables for the sizes/styles you want. It’s that easy. It is FREE! No money exchanges hands. If you are interested in donating only, the day of the event, you can get a tax receipt for your donations. Clothes must be clean and gently worn to be donated. This is a really fun event. It only happens once a year! Visit our Photo Gallery.
For more information view our Clothing Exchange (English+Spanish) flyer (PDF 226 KB) or email Volunteer Coordinator Kim Chan or GMVCC Children & Family Program Coordinator Cindy or call the Community Center at 425-432-1272.

So this weeks I got a friendly email reminder that my auto insurance policy is up for renewal. I love this reminder, because it is my reminder to shop for a better rate. I would say the easiest way to do this is to go through a insurance broker. A broker can shop around rates for you, comparing insurance companies, and saving you a lot of time! Or you can do this yourself and spend a lot of time and hassel. Yesterday, I did it the hard way (I need to find an insurance broker) and made calls. It was like talking to sales agents becuase they only have that one chance to sell you over the phone. When speaking with a broker, they are less concerned with selling you and more concerned about finding the best fit for your needs because they have numberous, not stuck on one company, they can compare rates at multiple auto insurers.
I should have known better, working through a mortgage broker myself, the many benefits of using a broker. It will save you time, credit pulls, and the hassel of being bombarded. But after all this, I did lower my auto policy by $2o a month. Next time I will use a broker.
PS. You don’t have to wait until your current policy goes up for renewal, you can do this at any point, I just use renewal as my reminder. Good luck!
